Southwest Arkansas Development Council

ACC Area 12

Description

The non-profit community action agency Southwest Arkansas Development Council, Inc. provides a number of services to low income families and the working poor. Some of the other main beneficiaries include senior citizens, the disabled, and families with young children.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program is commonly called LIHEAP. It offers eligible low income families short-term grants to pay their utilities and heating bills. Also, households receiving LIHEAP are connected to family development resources in the region, including Nevada, Hempstead, and Sevier County. Another similar offering from Southwest Arkansas Development Council (as funding allows) is the Emergency Food and Shelter program.

Assistance for seniors is offered. They can get free meals, enjoy social activities, get information on government resources such as Medicare, and more.

Weatherization is often offered by Southwest Arkansas Development Council and those families that receive LIHEAP (per above) are some of the main beneficiaries. Qualified low income households can receive a variety of free services, including weather-stripping, attic and wall insulation, replacement of doors and windows, and other improvements. The non-profit runs this in the entire region, including Hempstead, Howard, Little River, Miller, and Sevier County. Call 501-776-8446 for information on weatherization.

Transportation is offered in a crisis to appointments such as medical emergencies or maybe a job interview. Medicaid clients may benefit too.

Education and job training resources are offered as part of a Literacy program. English as a Second Language (ESL), math, and workshops for beginning computer skills. Case management is offered from REACH for Success, which helps people set goals, attend budget counseling, receive job referrals, and access other support.

Homeless support - There may be occasional grants available from SWADC as the result of federal funding. When possible, the community action agency can provide information on programs to call that can provide help for paying rent, arrange transitional housing, or have funds for security deposits. Case managers may also have referrals to alternative financing in Hempstead or Sevier County, such as no interest loans.
